Emission reductions and removals

GHG project validation & verification

Independent validation and verification of greenhouse gas projects, projected outcomes, emission reductions and removals.

What this delivers

Confidence in the information behind the claim.

Project claims need clear boundaries, suitable methodologies and traceable evidence. CoZero assesses project design or reported outcomes against agreed programme requirements and provides an independent validation or verification conclusion.

  • A defined project, programme, criteria and intended use
  • Assessment of methodology, baseline, project boundaries and material risks
  • Evaluation of monitoring information, calculations and supporting evidence
  • Transparent findings requiring correction or clarification
  • Independent review and an appropriate validation or verification conclusion

Standards and scope

Emission-reduction and removal projects are accepted only after confirming the applicable programme, criteria, sector competence, independence and accreditation status. Carbon-credit and carbon-market work is additionally subject to programme eligibility and registry requirements; it is not automatically represented as SANAS-accredited.

The independent output

A validation engagement ordinarily concludes with a validation report and validation statement or opinion. A verification engagement ordinarily concludes with a verification report and verification statement or opinion. Each conclusion applies only to the defined assertion, period, scope and criteria.

Questions answered

Frequently Asked Questions

What is assessed during GHG project validation?

Project validation generally assesses the proposed project design, boundary, baseline, methodology, assumptions, monitoring arrangements and projected emission reductions or removals.

The assessment determines whether the project information and intended outcomes are reasonable against the agreed programme, methodology or other applicable criteria.

What is assessed during GHG project verification?

Project verification assesses historical monitoring information and evidence relating to achieved emission reductions or removals.

This may include activity data, calculations, monitoring systems, project implementation, supporting records and material risks. The purpose is to obtain sufficient appropriate evidence to support an independent conclusion.

What types of GHG projects can CoZero assess?

Projects may include industrial, energy, waste, agricultural, land-use and other activities intended to reduce GHG emissions or enhance removals.

Acceptance depends on the project type, applicable methodology or programme, technical competence requirements, impartiality and CoZero’s authorised scope. Every project enquiry is reviewed before acceptance.

Can CoZero validate or verify carbon-credit projects?

Potentially. Carbon programmes and registries may have their own eligibility, methodology and approval requirements in addition to the ISO 14064 standards.

CoZero reviews each enquiry to determine whether it meets the relevant programme requirements and falls within CoZero’s competence and authorised scope.

Validation or verification does not guarantee project registration, programme acceptance or the issuance of carbon credits. These decisions remain with the relevant programme or registry.
